Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first Black person to run for president in 1972. This book is part of a series by Simon & Schuster called “You Should Meet” that features inspiring people throughout history. It was a joy to research, imagine, and share Shirley’s story with young readers. She was a trailblazer and her story is worth learning.

Visual research

I especially enjoyed illustrating the pages of Shirley’s childhood. Since there were no photographs of her at a young age, I had to do some research, reference multiple vintage photos, and, of course, use my imagination to find a way to bring her childhood to life.
